MEXICO’S Hector Velazquez went into attack early yesterday and vowed to shame Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao on September 10 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles in the co-feature of the sensational “Double Trouble” card.
At yesterday’s press conference held at the Max’s of Manila Restaurant in Glendale, California, that also featured Filipino Brian Viloria, Velazquez announced to American and Filipino media men that “everything will change on September 10... and fans should go watch out for a great fight.”
Velazquez did not say how he plans to humiliate Pacquiao, although records show the hard-hitting Mexican has won all his last five fights--four by knockout.
Present at yesterday’s press conference were Pacquiao, Bob Arum of Top Rank Promotions, boxer Vanes Martirosyan, Pacquiao’s new manager Shelly Finkel, and the Sydney Olympian Viloria, who will vie for the WBC 108-lb crown in the undercard.
Taking the podium following loud cheers from fans,
Pacquiao then went on to thank those who have been behind him.
“I am honored to fight here in Los Angeles… the people have been wonderful to me,” the Filipino boxing hero told the crowd.
Meanwhile, the undefeated Viloria, who challenges the hard-hitting Eric Ortiz of Mexico in the undercard, announced to the crowd that he is “one hundred percent Filipino” after promoter Bob Arum introduced him as being “part Filipino.”
“First of all, I want to clear things up,” said Viloria. “I’m not part Filipino, I’m [full] Filipino.”
Although born in Hawaii, Viloria said it was “not by choice.” He indicated he would have relished being raised in the Philippines, just as his parents were.
“I’m going to wear the Philippine flag on my trunks, and I hope that you will embrace me as one of your own,” Viloria told the Filipino fans.
The crowd then broke into a loud chant, “Brian, Brian, Brian!”
Mexican boxing great Erik Morales, who beat Pacquiao in a bloody 12-round encounter in Las Vegas last March, fights ex-Olympian Zaheer Raheem in the companion main feature of the Staples Center card.
Morales and Pacquiao are being propped up for a rematch early next year.
