NEW Generation ALA Boy and WBO Asia-Pacific bantamweight champion Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista made instant impact in Hawaii following a sensational fifth-round knockout of Thai boxer Aree Phosuwangym yesterday at the Neal Blaisdell Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Meanwhile, another ALA Gym-trained fighter, Edmund Velayo, scored his first international victory with a unanimous-decision win over OPBF No.7 ranked Kimun Na last March 8 in Seoul, South Korea.
In his US debut, Bautista became an instant celebrity following his knockout of Aree with an uppercut to the chin with 1:45 into the fifth of their scheduled 10-round contest.
“Actually, it was a three-punch combination. A jab, a hook to the body and an uppercut,” said Bautista in an interview with Sun.Star Cebu.
It was a pretty even fight in the opening rounds as both pugs tried to control the pace.
The first round was evenly fought. The second round went to Aree but Bautista got back to dominate the third and fourth rounds.
Bautista made his intentions known in the explosive fourth round, which saw several heavy exchanges leading to the knockout.
After the knockout punch, Aree lay face down and unconscious as medics rushed to his aid. He got back to his senses five minutes later.
Despite the knockout, both Bautista and his handler Antonio L. Aldeguer were one in saying that the Thai was tough.
“Aree reportedly fought more than 90 muay-Thai fights before shifting to professional boxing, which explains his toughness,” said Aldeguer.
“I never expected him to be this tough. He counterpunched his way and he strong punches. On the third round, I backpedaled a bit when I was hit with a solid straight. When I tried to hit his body, he just ate up my punches that’s why I went to the head and that uppercut ended the fight,” Bautista said.
With his sensational win, Bautista gained an auspicious number of supporters in Honolulu. For nearly an hour, the 18-year-old sensation signed autographs, posed for pictures and shook hands with the mostly-Filipino audience, including former world-champions Ben Villaflor, Jesus Salud and Rolando Bohol, who handed him the trophy.
